Dear Council member
T see that ,you will 6c voting on Bill 122 to spend $SOO,000 to lure a consultant to find a company
to build an incinerator. I think building an incinerator for Hilo is a big mistake! Al] incinerators
dump mercury, lead and other toxins into the air. No amount of"scrubbing" will eliminate this.
Not only is this harmful to breathe, but the mercury will get into the water and contaminate our
fish. Also, you will have to build a toxic waste landfill to handle the ash from the incinerator. So,
you still will need to build a new landfill, but it will be more expensive since it must contain toxic
waste: - '
The answer is to go to recycling with a new IandBll for that which can't be recycled. This should
tide us over until one of the new technologies is ready for safely eliminating trash.
Please don't spend $500,000 on a consukant for afresh-to-energy incinerator, but spend it on
getting ahead with recycling.
