`Sort' station funds
will be considered
at today's meeting
By HUNTER BISHOP
Tribune-Herald staff writer
A new `sort" station for rubbi~~h
in East Hawaii could get s boost
Wednesday if tha County Council
follows through on its preliminary
approval of $2.2 million in general
obligation bonds for the project.
Council Chair-
man Stacy Higa
said Monday that he
expects the bill to be
approved at the meet-
ing on its second and
final reading. But
that's if other coun-
cil members do not HIGA
attempt to amend it
" ~ in an attempt to raise
the amount of fund-
ing for the sort sta- '
lion, Higa cautioned.
The council will
consider the bill at its
meeting beginning 9
a.m. at the Sheraton
Keauhou Bay Resort KIM r
and Spa in Kona.
Mayor Harry Kim wanted at least' ~
$4 million for the sort station, bu
most of the council was not inclined
to provide any more than the $4 md~
lion already at Kim's disposal for the
W ' "r project. But on Sept. K, the council
voted 8-1 on a $2.2 compromiseZ m
expenditure proposed by Kona Coun- g p
cilwoman Virginia Isbell. O
The $2.2 million would be added ~ ~
[o the $4 million that was previousl~l! ~ ~
approved by the council to make the
sort station a X6.2 million project.
