We would like to testify that we are completely against trucking Hilo's trash to the other side of the island. You,
the members of the County Council must vote to fund a sort station for East Hawaii's trash. It simply does not
make sense to truck 200 tons of our trash to the other side of the island each and every day.
Aside from the expense involved, you must consider the increased traffic on our already dangerous Belt Highway
between Hilo and West Hawaii. Yes. we must look for long-term solutions to solve the landfill issue, but
constructing a sort station makes sense, and it wilt give us time to solve the problem of what to do with all of our
trash.
Despite the availability of recycling stations in our communities, a small percentage of the trash that could be
recycled is in fact recycled. Let's divert what we can away from the landfill and toward reuse. You must realize
also, that if trash is hauled to west Hawaii after March of 2006, there will some people who will simply dump their
trash along the side of the road since they cannot or will not pay the higher fees that trash collectors will pay and
they themselves will not drive their trash all the way to West Hawaii every week.
Please think about the long-term consequences for our island and do the right thing. Vote for funding the sort
station. The health of the aina depends on it.
