Dear Chair Higa,
1 would like to request time for a presentation by Dr. Sharon Vitousek of the North Hawaii Outcomes
Project (NHOP). [understand this presentation would be placed before the committee on Public Safety. 1 would
like to request one hour total; thirty minutes for the actual presentation and thirty minutes for a question and
answer segment, to be scheduled for the committee meetings on November 21, 2005.
Dr. Vitousek and NHOP have been working for many years collecting data, analyzing that data and
preparing reports regarding motor vehicle fatalities in Hawaii County. NHOP has also partnered with the Hawaii
County Police Department, the Office of the Prosecutor in Hawai i CounTy, the Hawaii County Department of
Public Works, the Flawai`i State Department of Transportation, the Impaired Driving Task Force and several
community traffic safety groups in an earnest effort to reduce fatalities on our roadways.
During this presentation, Dr. Vitousek would present some of her tindings over the course of many years
of research and analysis. She would also discuss her partnerships with the aforementioned agencies and how these
working relationships have created a united front in the battle against needless death and injury due to vehicular
crashes.
I feel Dr. V itousek's vast knowledge and incredible amount of passion for this issue combine to create an
invaluable resource we should utilize in our efforts to manage risks on our roadways.
