HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 190 Draft 01 2004-2006 .v w COUNTY OF HAWAII `V STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION NO. 1.9U U5 A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE COQUI FROG WORHING GROUP'S CONSOLH)ATED EFFORTS TO CONTROL AND ERADICATE COQUI FROGS IN HAWAII COUNTY WHEREAS, the Caribbean Tree Frog, also known as the coqui frog, was accidentally introduced to Hawaii from Puerto Rico in 1988; and WHEREAS, the coqui frog has no natural enemies in Hawaii that can keep its population in check; and WHEREAS, recognizing that the coqui frog population has exploded in the last 15 years and threatens Hawaii County's extremely fragile ecosystem and economy; and WHEREAS, having received communication from the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce on behalf of its 650-member businesses noting their deep concern and alarm by the widespread coqui frog population in West Hawaii and its threat to growth of commerce and well being of the community; and WHEREAS, having received communication from volunteers of the Kaloko Mauka Coqui Coalition noting their months of diligent efforts to keep coqui frogs from spreading outside of a 60-acre epicenter in their neighborhood community and seeking assistance to further their efforts; and WHEREAS, the Coqui Frog Working Group is amulti-agency working group comprised of federal, State and County agencies, organizations, and volunteers working together in a joint effort to control the spread of coqui frogs into coqui-free areas; and WHEREAS, the Coqui Frog Working Group is confident that island-wide educational outreach to retail outlets, plant nurseries, landscapers, and the community will provide a sound basis of information regarding methods of coqui frog eradication and control. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Hawaii to support the Coqui Frog Working Group and its consolidated efforts in working with governmental agencies, organizations, and the community to eradicate and control the spread of coqui frogs; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED to urge Council Members to encourage citizens in their respective districts to volunteer and assist the Coqui Frog Working Group in its outreach education, monitoring, and eradication efforts; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that tl,e County Clerk of the County of I-Iawai' i shall transmit copies of this Resold~tion to the State Department of Agriculture -Plant Pest Control Branch, Office of the Mayor, and the Office of the Governor.
