A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE COQUI FROG WORKING GROUP'S _
CONSOLIDATED EFFORTS TO CONTROL AND ERADICATE COQUI
FROGS IN HAWAII COUNTY
Dear County Council Members:
Hello. My name is Solomon Singer. I'm 14 years old, and I've been raised in Hawaii. My parents
have taught me to be kind to animals, and to never treat them cruelly.
I think iCs wrong for people to be killing coqui tree frogs simp]y because they don't like their
chirp and think it's too loud. I realize nobody likes to hear sounds they don't like. But killing frogs for
that reason is insensitive and mean.
And the way they kill the coquis is extremely cruel. Hydrated lime and citric acid burn the frogs
to death. We are told that you can go blind if hydrated lime contacts your eyes. Frogs have sensitive,
moist skin, like the skin covering your eyes. Imagine how the coqui must feel with the lime or acid
burning it to death. It's a cruel thing to do to a frog. And the Coqui Frog Working Group wants to kill
millions of frogs this way, along with geckos, skinks, spiders, and any other living creature and plants
that will be chemically burned to death along with the coqui.
The coquis are not trying to harm us. They are singing to other coquis. I live with coquis and
have for years now. I sleep with them all around my bedroom. And I can tell you that I sleep better with
coquis than I do without. And a lot of other people say the same thing. Millions of people. We all think

coquis are great. That's why Puerto Rico made the coqui its national animal.
Sometimes I'm ashamed of living in Hawaii, where the government promotes killing innocent,
harmless frogs, instead of protecting frogs from inhumane people. If a child on the Mainland burned a
frog to death with acid or hydrated lime, we would think that child was mentally disturbed and cruel In
Hawaii, we would congratulate him or her and the government might even offer a grant to do more
killing.
I hope you help end this hostility towards the coqui. They are really lovable once you get to
know them. Please, give peace a chance. Thank you.
