(cont.) • Individual level data (i.e. "raw" data) is needed for this type of causal analysis. - Control for confounders (multivariate analyses) • Agc • Restraint use • Alcohol involvement • Driver error • etc. North Hawaii Outcomes Project November 21, 2005 21 Report on Hawaii County Motor Vehicle Related Death Rate & Efforts to Reduce L Summary and Conclusions • Injuries are a leading cause of death in Hawaii. - Occupant fatalities are a leading cause of fatal injuries. • Hawaii County has by far the highest rate of occupant fatalities. • What is Needed? - Police crash and DOT data is needed to explore the causes (using multi-variate techniques). - Timely 2eoeraphic analysis is also needed to identify high-risk stretches of road (DOT analysis is currently 1 year later). - A few other states are using real-time crash-location mapping systems to lower crash rates. (Crash clusters are identified in real-time.) Recommendations to the Mayor ~,F r , . ~ ) I~~~~~~ ~iir1'i ~ i, "How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?"
