Subject: Resolution 193-05 ~ i,~~- I

To the County Council, Nov. 7, 2005.
I support Comm 496 (Res 193-05), to 'establish modern roundabouts as the
preferred design for use at intersections in the County of Hawaii.' The modern roundabout is NOT a traffic circle or rotary,
and by design is
safer than either of these, and far safer than intersections where lines of traffic cross in front of each other as they do with
stop signs and
signal lights. This is a matter of record.
SAFETY should make it a compelling reason for this county, with the
highest rate of accidents in the state, to adopt the resolution.
There are additional significant benefits, which I hope will be aired
during the committee and council meetings. Despite the implications of
Gary Hoffs recent cartoon and the opinions of two editorial letters (in
the Hawaii Tribune-Herald), we don't have to be rocket scientists to use
modern roundabouts safely.
I have had experience with modern roundabouts, and found them to be safer,
cleaner, greener, and cheaper than traditional intersections; and I hope to see their
use implemented here to give Hawaii those benefits.
Thank you for giving this resolution your favorable consideration.
Respectfully,
E Lyman Stouse Weatherford
