Late UV I �i ZUU57 SAFE COMMUNITY HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM QUARTERLY REPORT PROJECT `I7TLE: IICPD CLICK IT OR TICKET PROGRAMIOP05-05 (02-11-01) Priority Area: I Area: Occupant Protection The goal of this project is to reduce fatalities and injuries to front seat occupants, and rear seat occupants aged 17 and under, of motor vehicle collisions by increasing public awareness of the youth backseat seat belt la, s. 1. Conduct two "Click It or 'Picket" 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments (one in Puna and one in Kona) for youth aged 6 through 18. Each event to run three days. 2. Have the participation of about 600 you'h and attendance of about 1200 people at the two events. i. Obtain about 1000 pledges from youth and adults to wear their seat belts and ensure that all occupants of vehicles operated by them are seat belted. 4. Issue 1000 "Click It or Ticket" t -shirts promoting seat belt use to all participants and volunteers of the event. 5. Conduct a "Click It or "Picket" presentations throughout the events. 6. Issue about 300 customized "Click It or Ticket" medals to placing teams in each age division. 7. Involve community and student volunteers in assisting with the tournaments. Place "Click It or Ticket" pasters in 40 public schools island -wide. 8. Coordinate a cooperative media event to be held during the tournaments, to include Keiki car -seat checkpoint, booster -seat educational presentation and enforcement projects to be conducted to coincide with the tournaments. 9. Tournaments to be held on or about the' lick It or Ticket' mobilizations. 10. Partnerships with the Department of Education, Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition, Department of Health, HATCH, High School Key Clubs, and community organizations will be formed to coordinp+e and facilitate these tournaments. 11. Identify organizations and opportunities to make this a self-sufficient event. GRANT PERIOD RESI'LTS: (FINAL REPORT) • "f -shirt prize giveaways were conducted on the two major radio stations in the South Hilo and Puna Districts. Giveaways were conducted during the National Click It or Ticket mobilizations. • Three "Click It of Ticket" 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments held: o May 20-2_' at the Papaikou Gymnasium in the Hilo District. o August 9-11 at the Mt. View Gymnasium in the Puna District. o August 27-28 at the Parker S,rhool Gymnasium South Kohala District. • Approximately 130 basketball team, consisting of 650 youth participated in the three events. Approximately 2000 people attended the events. • Obtained over 1,000 pledges from youth and adults to wear their seat belts and ensure that all occupants of vehicles operated by them are seat belted. • 1.000 "Click It or Ticket" T-shirts were issued to participants, volunteers and coordinators of the events. • Issued approximately 75 customized "Click It or Ticket' medals to placing teams in each of the eight divisions. • Conducted "Click It or Ticket" presentations at the event, to include radio broadcasts on local stations promoting the event and seatbelt usage. • The tournament was conducted in )artnership with the Hawaii County Police Department Traffic Services Section, Traffic linforcement Unit, Community Policing and HI -Pal staff, Department of Health, Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition, HATCH. Keaau High School Key Club, Keaau High School_ Hawaii Warriors Athletics, New West Broadcasting and Pacific Radio Group. Over 60 volunteers participated. • "Click It or Ticket" posters placeu in 40 schools island -wide to include the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Community College. • A coordinated media event, including live radio remotes, press releases, and "Click It or Ticket" commercials wa, conducted in conjunction with the events. In the 9-10 Boys Division, the Warriors ousted Big Dogs 11-1 to claim the title. The Rebels finished third. In the 11-12 Boys Division, Warriors Gold edged Warriors Silver 6-4 in the title game. The Wahine Warriors II finished third. (Girls teams may enter the Boys Division, but boys teams may not enter the Girls Division.) In the 13-14 Boys Division, the Bears out -gunned Take It Outside Red 14-13 in the finals. Take It Outside White finished third. In the 9-10 Girls Division, Zoom II outplayed Warriors Blue 7-4 for the title. Zoom I finished third. In the 11-12 Girls Division, Wahine Warriors II beat Wahine Warriors 1 14-8 in the finals. The pirates finished third. In the 13-14 Girls Division, the Slammers edged out K.S. White 12-9 for the title. Showtime came in third. "This tournament is the kick-off for our 'Click It or Ticket' enforcement mobilization," said Sergeant Dexter Veriato, head of the Traffic Services Section. "From May 23 through June 5, 2005 officers' island -wide will be heavily enforcing the seat belt usage laws It's part of a national zero -tolerance campaign to increase seat belt use and reduce fatalities and injuries in traffic crashes." ### HAWAII POLICE DEPARTMENT HAWAII ISLE POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE DENNIS M. ONISHI, RECREATION DIRECTOR PHONE: 961-2219 AUGUST 15, 2005 9-10 Champs 11-12 Girls Champs 13-14 Girls Champs 11-12 Boys Champs 13-14 Boys Champs MEDIA RELEASE The Hawaii Police Department's Traffic Services Section and Hawaii Isle Police Activities League recently sponsored a "Click It or Ticket" 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at Mt. View Gym. A total of 250 youngsters ages 5 through 14 took part as players on 55 basketball teams. The 5-6 and 8 -Under divisions featured goodwill games between 20 teams. In the 9-10 division, Boys & Girls Club Kings ousted the Lakers 11-4 to claim the title. The boys & Girls Club Kings Red team finished in third place. In the 11-12 Boys Division, Warriors Blue I outgunned Warriors Blue II by a score of 15-7 to garner the title. Island Heat finished third. The 11-12 Girls Division saw the Wahine Warriors outplay Hoaloha Red 15-3 to capture the title with Eastside finishing third. In the 13-14 Girls Division, Kamehameha defeated Zoom 18-11 for the championship, and the Warriors finished third. "The 'Click It or Ticket' Tournament is a positive forum to promote seatbelt use among young people and their parents," said Lieutenant James Sanborn, Community Policing coordinator. The event was a collaborative effort between the Hawaii Police Department and the County Parks and Recreation Department. HAWAII POLICE DEPARTMENT HAWAII ISLE POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE DENNIS M. ONISHI, RECREATION DIRECTOR PHONE: 326-4646, EXT. 258 MEDIA RELEASE The Hawaii Police Department's Traffic Services Section and Hawaii Isle Police Activities League is sponsoring a HI -PAL "Click It or Ticket" 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Tournament play will take place on August 27-28, 2005, at the Waimea Parker School Gym in South Kohala. Team entries are being accepted in the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11- 12, 13-14, 15-17 for both boys and girls divisions. A player may play only in one division, and the age cut-off date is December 31, 2005 "The goal of the tournament is to educate our parents and youths on our seatbelt laws," said Sergeant Dexter Veriato, head of the Traffic Services Section. "Click It or Ticket" is a national educational and enforcement campaign to increase seatbelt usage and decrease traffic fatalities and injuries. Interested teams should call the HI -PAL Kona office at 326-4646, Ext. 258; the HI -PAL Hilo office at 961-2219; or the Traffic Services Section at 961-2305. Each division will be limited Teams from North and South Kona must complete and drop off their registration packets at the HI -PAL Kona Office between 4 and 8 p.m. on August 18, 2005. Teams from North and South Kohala and Hamakua must drop of their registration packets at the Waimea Police Station between 4 and 8 p.m. on the same date. For further information, residents should call the HI -PAL Kona office, the HI -PAL Hilo office or the Traffic Services Section.
