In Re: Kaumana Springs Wilderness Preserve, matter [Res.# 186-05] sched
before hearing, Wed., Nov. 9, 2005
I am, Dr. David N. Cook, a citizen of Hilo, physician, now retired, and, together
with my family, since 1988, have been a resident home-owner at the above
Hokule'a Place address.
It is my wish that the below statement be read, considered by the full County
Council and as acknowledgement be entered into the record of the above
hearing.
At issue is proposed elimination of the Kaumana Wilderness Preserve via sale of
and release to buyer of full legal control of the constituted more than 60 acre
parcel TMK(3) 2-3-30:04 to an unnamed private party for a sum in the
neighborhood of $500,000 cash. I wish to be listed in strong opposition to this
measure and believe that retention of the Kaumana Springs Wilderness Reserve
in its present state and function is in my family's best interests as well as for the
entire community at-large. On the other-hand, its elimination and probable
conversion to other use and/or function would result in loss of water shed land,
destruction of breeding and nesting habitat of multiple species of valuable
birdlife [e.g. Hawaiian Hawk], as well as degrading of air quality due to loss of
natural filtering effects delivered by forest greenery.
Our family's decision to establish our permanent home in its present location was
significantly inFluenced by its close proximity to the wilderness preserve together
with assurances/expectations it would remain in perpetuity. It adds great value
to our property which would be adversely affected should developers in the
future destroy the forest, increase vehicular traffic through our neighbor hood,
and affect climate and/or quality of living to a negative degree.
