HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0500.002 2004-2006 An Untold Triumph "An Untold Triumph". The story of the U. S. Army's 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments will be shown at the Palace Theater on November 11, 2005. Admission is $12 per person. A reception will be held prior to the film's showing at 6:30 p.m. The documentary, presented on Veteran's Day, honors all veterans and pays a special tribute to the men who served in the lst and 2"d Filipino Infantry Regiments. There were approximately 39 young men from the Big Island who served in the regiments; 22 aze still with us today. "The Army's best kept secret", as the Regiments became known to its members and communities, was due to the fact that their extraordinary feats were accomplished behind enemy lines in clandestine operations. Many of the military records documenting their work have only recently been declassified. The ls` Filipino Regiment was formed specifically to participate in the "liberation of the Philippines." About 800 of its members were specially trained in Australia and secretly landed in the Philippines by submarines or dropped by parachutes to conduct clandestine operations months before General Douglas MacArthur landed on Leyte on October 20, 1944. Others engaged in "mopping up" operations in Leyte and Samar. Of the 7,000 who volunteered, less than 900 aze still alive. Of these, nearly 100 aze in Hawaii. Hawaii's Filipinos began joining the 1st and 2"a Infantry Regiments in February 1945 for "mopping up" duties. These duties often involved bloody fighting as pockets of land still under enemy control were taken over. After VJ Day, the soldiers carried out occupation duties such as guarding the gas lines running from Bataan to Clark Field. The Palace Theater, in partnership with Carol Diama Brown and Lorraine Godoy, are sponsoring the showing of "An Untold Triumph." Domingo Los Banos, one of the film's producers, and a veteran of the ls` Filipino Infantry Regiment, will be present at the event and will answer any questions that may arise. Tickets are available at the Palace Theater box office, CD Wizard, Basically Books, and TNT Seafood Imports and Asian Grocery. Comm. No. Soo• Z• Ref. To ray ~i Raf.
