Dear Chairman Higa and Council Members:
We strongly disagree with your proposal to remove Councilman Pete Hoffmann as co-chair of the County
Planning Committee.
The current Planning Committee arrangement has proven to be a strong deterrent against the previous "rubber-
stamping" of zoning changes fostered by previous councils.
Ignoring the desires of the constituents is an insult to the people of South Kohala, and all districts that benefit from
the leadership of Pete and Angel Pilago.
We can't understand why you are so confused. But it is very disconcerting to think that something that is working
well is confusing you.
The committee has had success in establishing precedents against over-eager development, establishment of
new precedents for re-zoning, and in some locations, insured limitations were placed on applications whose
zoning categories were too broad.
We are also concerned that Mr. Hoffmann remain on this committee because Kohala has some pressing issues
that need a councilman who is familiar with the desires of the people of Kohala. These include the County
Workforce Housing development in Waikoloa, the possible ferry service in Kawaihae and all the ramifications to
infrastructure that are implied and the desire of the constituents of Waimea to veto subdivisions in that community
until the community development plan is prepared.
It is in our best interest to have Mr. Hoffmann remain as co-chair of the County Planning Committee.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles W Wilson
