Dear Chairman Higa,
I am writing to request that you and council members reconsider the plan to remove Councilman Bob Jacobson and
Peter Hoffman from their respective chairmanships. These councilmen have served our county very well, and they
represent the views and concerns of their electorate.
The stands of several members on the council, in contrast, have been difficult to reconcile with the difficult issues we
face in the future; namely the infrastructure needs for waste management, county services such as roads, traffic
management, safe drinking water and housing for our limited-income residents, many of whom are two income earners at
minimum wage jobs or elderly on fixed incomes. If this county is to maintain a viable lifestyle for existing residents, we
must provide diverse parks, a minimum of traffic, open space and a safe environment for them.
Bob Jacobson, Chair of the Environmental Management Committee, has done an outstanding job as Chair. His work
with local, State and Federal agencies and residents of the Big Island to protect open space and our threatened natural
resources is critical to the health and economy of our county. I have known Bob, and have watched him work in our
community to support park development and open space preservation. In addition, he has worked tirelessly to find a
solution to our burgeoning waste issues, in concert with Mayor Kim and Ms. Bell.
Pete Hoffmann, Co-Chair of the Planning Committee, has been an effective advocate of many of us who would like to
see controlled and sensible growth on the Big Island. He is tackling the very nature of development perks that tend to favor
the wealthy new residents over the needs of our island people.
Chairman Higa, and Council members, I ask you to retain Bob Jacobson and Pete Hoffmann in their respective roles.
Mahalo,
Deborah Ward
