i understand that ar nc~ Council mccdng this "L'uesday, November 22•, one of the matters to be discussed is
that of changing the members of the Planning Committee, and that this is specifically targeted at
Councilman I {offmamt. it appears froth artidcs in Wcst Hawaii'I'oda5~, as well as talk at meetings around
the island, drat more time is spent be Council members on infighting than on the problems facing the 13ig
Island.
Vthough I would Gke to believe that none of the above is true, 1 do not want to take any chances, and
therefore [decided to write to you since I cannot attend the meeting due to my obligation of picking
someone up at the airport.
As far as Council tncmbcxs getting along, I realize that every~onc has their beliefs and~or agendas and that
strong debates most probabl}' rake place among the nine of pou. However, I believe we would all be better
off if coo would listen move to your constituents, work on doing whats best for this island, and not move
forward on projects until: 1) AI.I. mformanon, costs, and positives as well as negatives about each project
arc compiled and discussed without bias, and 2) Current problems, i.e. roads, schools, drugs, housing, crc.
arc addressed so that these problems aren't compounded.
if what I have heard is true, and that Councilman 1 Ioffmann is to be removed from the Planning
Committee, I would suggest reconsidering this mote. ~~rdcles I have read and meetings I have attended err
which Counalman Hoffmann has spoken, lead me to believe that he has indeed listened to his constituents
and is moving forward in a manner ~i~hich takes this island and its residents into consideration. I know he
has listened ro the folks in Waimea echo hacc said to veto any sub divisions in du area until a communirt~
development plan is presented by member. of the community. :1s such, members of the communiq~ arc
tirelessh~ working on a plan that Neill be made available, outlining what residents feel is best for the
communtn~ and its future growth.
I personally have spoken to Councilman Hoffmann regarding dre Supcrfcrr~~. Counciltan Hoffmann has
stated that he feels the tiupcrferty will be good Eor [he islands. Although I have mV doubts about just hoc
bcnefiaal this venture will be for the I3ig Island, I was encoutagcd to know that Councilman I Ioffmann has
err least consistently asked for the ultimate dollar amount that this project would rcyuire. (I recenth~ heard
on HPR dial in addition to a ~40~~1 Srntc loan, there is also a $141,ti1 hedexal loan for the Supcrferrv. And
cct, in recent achdes in ~l~hc 1laui Ncws as wdl as obscn~adons from government officials in the past, there
are those who question whether or not this is a viable venture with regard to the investment that needs ro be

has said that he has aer to receive mformauon about a Master Plan for Kawaihac Harbor with regard to the
SuperEcrry. I~or those people wh~~ live in the area, and especialh~ tier those who hacc attcncdcd nc~
Kawaihac local Resource Council meeting, and the "Palk Storer gatherings with Congrtessman Case and
others, knowing what is going ro happen in Kawaihac Harbor is ccr~° important. I'o dare, it appears to

continue to degrade our island ba:msc "controlled growth" was onh~ a buzz phrase that seemed popular
about 9 months ago; not malifi.
Recent articles in West Flawaii "Codav have shown Councilman Hoffmann working hard Eoc affordable
housing. It is a disgrace that people from this island cannot afford housing here, and that dc~°clopcrs can
essentially buy their waa out of prnciding affordable housing.
[ do hope the Counri Council will come to terms and start to seriously cons-idex the matters of importance
to the residents of this island, and not connnuc to bicker.
Most important. [f it is nue that Councilman l Iof6nann is to be removed from the Planning Committee, I
strongly urge Council members to reconsider. In my estimation, he is doing what the people of his district
dccted him to do.
