Subject: Council Reorganization
Dear Chairman Higa:
Please count me as strongly objecting to your proposal to remove Councilmember Jacobson from
his position as chair of the Environmental Management Committee, and Councilmember Hoffman
from his co-chairmanship of the Planning Committee. Both, in my opinion, and in the opinion of my
friends and neighbors, are doing their jobs well and unselfishly serving all the citizens of Hawaii
County.
Councilmember Robertson's efforts have helped move toward creation of a sort station on the East
side, which will reduce the tonnage that will have to be trucked to the West side landfill, and we've
at long last made some solid strides toward a solid waste technology.
Councilmember Hoffman, as Planning Committee co-chair with Councilmember Pilago, has done
much to bring rampant development under control, adopt long overdue revisions to the General
Plan, and foster the creation of urgently needed affordable housing through enactment
of amendments to the affordable housing provisions of the County Code.
Although I might not always agree with some of the positions taken by these excellent public
servants, I always admire their dedication, honesty and forthrightness, respect their willingness to
listen to all sides of an issue, and to base their decisions on careful study of all the relevant
facts and considerations.
Aloha,
