Subject: Hawaii Island Land Trust
Aloha Councilmembers,
I am writing to encourage the county to tap Hawaii Island Land Trust (HILT) as the non-profit entity to
work with on land acquisition for open spaces and parks, as recommended in Sunae Tokumura's report
to the County Council, funded by Dr. Ilolschuh.
I have had the opportunity to meet with I ?LT's board of directors and know oftheir strategic plans to
identify and preserve land around the island. I was impressed by the professionalism and dedication of
the volunteer board members, which include a Ph.D, a lawyer, an excouncilmember, a life-long resident
of the island and long-time residents.
I applaud the council's endeavor to work with non-profits in general -these types of collaborations are
essential to allow our island community to tap into funding not always available to government
agencies, to better understand the needs of each local community, and to optimize resources with the use
of volunteers.
Thank you for your time and kind consideration of this testimony.
