Aloha Mr. Ray,
As Chair of the Economic Development Committee of the Council, we would like to
inform you and your committee members about new technologies which have the
capacity to make a significant economic improvement in our island state.
The State of Hawaii, U.S. Territories and other island nations in the Pacific share a
problem in durability, maintenance and lifespan of a large majority of buildings.
The tropical conditions are hostile to traditional mainland wood frame structural
standards introduced a century ago. Recurrent hurricanes and earthquakes leave
the population vulnerable to disaster. A society's budget for maintenance, repair
and replacement of existing structures reduces the capital available for investment
in new housing or government infrastructure.
New construction materials and systems are now available which can double or
triple the lifespan of residential, commercial and government structures. With
these improvements it is now possible to exceed current building code standards
without increased budgets and achieve substantial savings, over time, in repair &
maintenance. Improved constructive standards can also greatly enhance
performance in a disaster reducing the load on government in time of crisis.
We believe you and your committee will find this to both interesting and useful
