While roundabouts might be wonderful for the smooth movement of vehicles through intersections, they could be dangerous for pedestrians if not designed in apedestrian-sensitive manner. As you may or may not know, I was the community member who provided the idea of installing a modern roundabout at the future Ali'i Parkway /Royal Poinciana Drive intersection. As a resident of Royal Poinciana Drive since 1988, I viewed the roundabout as an excellent traffic calming device, that would give our residents, including myself, a safe way to cross the intersection by foot without sacrificing our ocean-oriented lifestyle. In 2000, I traveled to Oahu to test out the two compact roundabouts that had been recently installed. While both of them worked well to slow vehicle speed, I was very disappointed in how difficult it was for a pedestrian to cross the roundabout located at the upper Keeaumoku Street location as the cars kept coming and would not even stop or yield for the pedestrian. That experience made me realize how a roundabout could work against the safety of pedestrians. It was not a good feeling. Therefore, I strongly urge you to design all modern roundabouts with pedestrian crossing devices that would require the vehicles to stop or yield to pedestrians.
