Aloha mai kakou,
I would like to submit testimony supporting the efforts to protect Native
Hawaiian ancestral remains (iwi kupuna), funerary objects (moepu), sacred
objects, and cultural patrimony from desecration and destruction.
My name is Donna Kainaniokalihiwai Kahaunaele, born and raised in Anahola, c__
Kauai, and a Hilo resident since August 1993. I am especially concerned
for the safety and sanctity of our graves, iwi kupuna and moepu as
depicted in the Kawaihae cave (also known as "Forbes Cave") descration and -
lawsuit.
The eternal resting places of our ancestors and our families along with -
that which they choose to take with them are sacred and must be protected ,
from harm, not only by our families, but with the aid of our government as
well. We are raised knowing that those areas are to be respected as
sacred. We will not and cannot allow any type of desecration or
destruction.
Mahalo for your efforts in recognizing and supporting this important
concern of the Native Hawaiian community. Our kupuna thank you too.
