Under the proposed change, our street will experience a huge increase in traffic flow on school days between 7:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Because Alae Street is a relatively narrow road, with a 20 Mile Per Hour speed limit, no dividing line, and no sidewalks, we are especially concerned for the safety of our children as they attempt to either walk or ride their bikes to school in the morning. We are appealing to you to find some other way in which to address traffic problems stemming from morning rush hour traffic on Waianuenue Avenue. Redirecting the traffic flow from amain artery onto a residential street that is without sidewalks is putting the residents of our street, particularly young children, at great risk. We have attached a petition signed by fifty residents of Alae Street (between Ljaimana and Halai) opposing the intent of Bill 145. Clearly, the proposed traffic change does not address the issue of pedestrian safety on Alae Street, and for this reason we ask you to vote against Bill 145. Sincerely, - / ` Thomas O'Neill Reiko O'Neill Comm. liq~. 1Ris lbw T 1e[ ~resenfed COJNU(- RRet. ~o PETITION TO HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL r WHEREAS the County of Hawaii is planning to change the school day one way pattern on Waianuenue to begin at Komohana Street and end at Laimana Street, and WHEREAS people using Waianuenue Street going north will turn onto Laimana Street during the one way period, and WHEREAS people wishing to continue up Waianuenue will probably turn onto Alae Street to go up to Komohana Street, and WHEREAS the new pattern will substantially increase the traffic on Alae Street between Laimana and Haili during the one way period, and WHEREAS there are children, elderly and pets living on this block, and WHEREAS there are no sidewalks on this block, and WHEREAS the increased traffic will put the residents and pets of Alae Street at risk and create traffic congestion on Alae Street, NOW THEREFORE we the undersigned residents of the block of Alae Street between Laimana and Halai, in order to protect our children, elderly, and pets do hereby petition the County of Hawaii to either (l) maintain the current pattern, (2) eliminate the one way pattern altogether, or (3) make Alae Street one way from Haili to Laimana during the one way period.
