Dear Councilman Hoffmann,
I'm not certain if I'll be able to attend the Council meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, so I am writing to
you to express my concern. I feel you have worked hard to listen to your constituents, oftentimes in the
face of strong opposition. I'm hoping that your concern for, and drive toward achieving, what's best for the
Big Island and its citizens will continue.
I believe problems on the Big Island are out of control.
About 18 months ago the buzz words seemed to be "planned growth" and "good for tax revenue".
Councilman, I am hard pressed to find proof of planned growth, and I question how well our tax dollars are
being used. Continued building without addressing problems with our infrastructure is irresponsible, and
hoping that problems will work themselves out is naive. In addition, where are the tax revenues going? We
still seem to have problems with our roads, schools, and drugs as well as having insufficient police and fire
personnel. barge homes and resorts are being built, while water supply is questionable.
The common practice seems to be to proceed with growth, and if problems arise, deal with them at that
time. If the major fire in Waikoloa last year and yesterday's accident on Palani Rd. do not show the need for
improving our roads NOW, before adding more cars to them, something is terribly wrong with our County
Council's vision for the Big Island.
One would think that the numerous concerns mentioned over and over again in the Letters section of West
Hawaii Today would prompt our County Council to stop and evaluate with a microscope where the Big
Island is headed. Continuing on the present path will only compound our current problems.
I urge you and the other Council members to take the time to address current issues before moving ahead
with more building and rezoning. With that in mind, I urge you to vote against Hilu Hilu Development's
rezoning application.
