Citizens in Kamuela, Waikoloa and Kawaihae have been participating in large numbers, attending meetings, going to training sessions, completing surveys, having focus groups, identifying priorities, organizing, and attending presentations by the many consultants on contract for this project. Growth in South Kohala is occurring at an unprecedented rate. Our area infrastructure, is grossly inadequate to support growth. It barely supports the status quo, with gravel trucks barreling down highways, heavy construction equipment moving everywhere, and people making long-distance commutes. Some of those commutes are not long distance, just long-time. In addition, we have needs for schools, trails, traffic mitigation, community centers, the ability for more children to walk to school safely. Not all these needs will be met by the County. That is all the more reason we need to proceed promptly with the support of the Planning Department. Challenge the existing resources, move positions from less time-critical projects, contract for assistance, don'tjust sit there. Don't accept that Kona and Puna are the ONLY areas that need to move forward right now. Our citizens are informed, organized, energetic and eager to participate in the Community Development Planning Process. We are ready to utilze the resources the County has hired to assist our efforts. We are ready, willing, and able to.move forward. Don't leave us out!
