Resolution 167: Related to the Funding of a Presentation by the Honorable James McLay
Chairman Arakaki and Members of the County Council;
The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce is please to support the Council's efforts to bring Mr.
McLay to Hilo to shaze his experience with reinventing government functions and efficiencies in
New Zealand. Mr. McLay is reported to be an excellent speaker and an experienced advocate for
improving public sector operations.
Over the last fifteen years New Zealand has emerged as one of the most progressive and dynamic
economies in the Pacific with a pubic sector economy that is lean and results oriented. The
expenditure of tax payers money in New Zealand is measured by its outcomes and there is a high
level of accountability built into the budgeting and expenditure system. These are innovations that
Hawaii needs to consider as we all explore ways to re-invigorate our sluggish economy.
The Chamber is glad to partner with the Council in promoting Mr. McLay's visit and will provide
a luncheon setting for him to address the broader community after his presentation to the Council
is over.
Again, we support Resolution 167 and congratulate the Council for making time and resources
available to have Mr. McLay share his experience with us.
Sincerely,
effrey Melrose
President
