Dear Chairman Higa and Members of the County Council,
Attached is a copy of a proposed charter amendment. I ask for the Council's favorable review
and consideration in approving the proposal for submittal to the voters of our County.
The purpose of this amendment is to adopt "Hawai'i Fire Department" as the formal name of our
department. Currently, Article VII, Chapter 4 of the County Charter establishes the identity of
our agency as "Fire Department."
Historically, our identity was formalized in 1892 as the "Hilo Volunteer Fire Department." As
we have evolved through the years, the Department has been referred to by various names. This
proposal will ensure standardization and recognition of our department's name as it is generally
reflected in our day to day communications and in our formal interaction with other agencies.
We propose the following amendment to the voters: "Shall the Fire Department adopt
"Hawai'i Fire Department" as its formal name?"
I would appreciate your favorable action and support in this matter. I am willing to discuss this
