SUBJECT: PARKING SPACF,S AND ST. PETER'S BY THE SEA CHURCH
Your November 14, 1997, letter to Mayor Stephen Yamashiro regarding parking spaces at St. Peter's by the
Sea Church was referred to the Department of Public Works for response.
We submitted a bill for an ordinance to prohibit parking along Alii Drive near Kahaluu Beach Park on
October 7, 1997. The bill (copy enclosed) was submitted to provide safety for moving and parked vehicles,
bikers and pedestrians in the Kahaluu Beach Park area. The bill would prohibit parking on the makai side of
Alii Drive along the guardrail between the church and the park, where the width of the shoulder is too narrow
(less than 7 fee[) to accommodate most regular sized vehicles. Parking would be allowed on the makai side
of Alii Drive from Magic Sands Beach to the point where the guardrail is at least 7-feet wide, if the vehicle
could park completely off the roadway and not block driveways.
The Committee on Public Works and Parks deferred the bill on November 4, 1997, because of the parking
concerns and [he determination of the exact location where the shoulder width narrows to less than 7 feet. It
will be placed on the council committee agenda at a later date. You may testify at [he committee meeting
when the bill is placed on the agenda.
Should you have any questions regarding the parking situation on Alii Drive, please contact Richard
Nishimura, Traffic Division Chief, at 961-8341.
