SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT
ALII DRIVE - ADJUSTMENTS TO PARKING RESTRICTIONS
This confirms your October 22, 1997, letter and subsequent
telephone conversation with Captain Dale Fergerstrom regarding
our request to prohibit parking along the makai side of Alii
Drive by Kahaluu Beach Park.
The shoulder of Alii Drive between Saint Peter's Church and the
north entrance of Kahaluu Beach Park is approximately sia to
seven feet wide. This width cannot accommodate parked vehicles.
Many vehicles which park along the shoulder are unable to park
completely off the main travel portion of the roadway. An
additional hazard occurs when occupants exit their vehicles
which forces southbound traffic across the centerline to avoid
colliding into the vehicle's open door.
Pedestrians are also forced to walk onto the roadway which
creates a very dangerous condition.
Sight limitations for southbound traffic caused by parked
vehicles and the natural curve in the roadway increase these
hazards.
