Testimony for Hawaii County Council's Planning Committee Meeting today in Hilo
For the record:
Even in the context of Hawaiian politics it is offensive and outrageous that the Mayor and the
County Council would consider to change the laws making it possible for them to be able to
Decide on their own, without recourse, on zoning and land use issues that have statewide
implications.
These are issues that are still in the courts and have passed through many levels of litigation
multiple times and should continue to have full public input and discussion.
This is not some kind of abstract issue.
It is an issue that every resident has to face daily with the overcrowded roads and the lack of
resources that impacts us all.
We have a right to know what is being planned in our neighborhoods as it does affect our
property values and livelihoods and peace of mind in our daily lives.
Since the Hawaii Supreme Court has held that Planning Director Chris Yuen's interpretation of
some of the planning codes was "manifestly incorrect and unreasonable" we are concerned that
he not be given more power without the checks and balances already rightfully in place.
It seems like he is being rewarded for ignoring the laws in place and betraying the public trust
that his office implies.
We need more input into the land use process and not less. Comm°a

We also need full disclosure of every step of the process.
We want to know what is being planned for our neighborhood so that we can make good
decisions regarding our future economic and personal lives.
Respectfully,
