The decision to allow the appointed planning director the authority to decide on the approval of
subdivisions with no recourse by the public is not in the interest of the people, the island or the
island's visitors. The people and the neighbors of these proposed subdivisions have a right to
know about decisions that will affect their properties and their lives.
The Subdivision Control Code was established to protect the island from the indiscriminate,
illegal and harmful actions or lack of actions by the county. The result of the unplanned sprawl
is evident throughout the island from the lack of planning for infrastructure creating horrendous
traffic problems. A "planning" department is supposed to be proactive, not reactive.
If this change is approved, it will be just another example of the council members being totally
unresponsive to the voters who put them in office!
