Subject: Fair and Equal is all we ask
Dear Council Members:
As all of you know West Hawaii has blossomed over the past five to ten years, I am an optimist. If I were a
pessimist I would say it has exploded. My point being there are more people living here full time, more people
wanting to get involved in local government. How can we do this if we need to travel to Hilo all the time? We
have jobs, families and reasons why that trip is too much to consider.
I have seen the East/West alienation become more and more intense as our side of the island gets bigger
and bigger, literally and figuratively. We need to foster a unity in government on both sides. Either we move
the government offices to Waimea, which is not a bad idea, or we ask our leaders to "share" in the
inconvenience of having a government seat that is 2-1/2 hours away.
Bill 268 will offer "concerned citizens" to be heard, have access to the governmental process, allow the
council to see our side of the story, and possibly help with the East/West problems.
Please support Bill 268 - optimistically. Pessimistically speaking, if you don't it will give West Hawaii a
message that you are not willing to meet us half way. The other option is to move the offices to Waimea -
would you consider that? Fair and Equal is all we ask.
