Dear Councilman Pilago:
I write this letter to you as the representative of Kanuha Ohana LLC, which
entity is comprised of many members of the Kanuha Ohana of Kona. We support
the zoning change being requested for TMK (3) 7-5-3: parcels 7, 8, & 9 by SCD
Kona 108 LLC, which change is proposed to re-designate about 108 acres from
A-5a to RA-1 and RM-3.5 for some affordable housing and a Salvation Army site
plus some 1-acre plus lots.
The land in question is adjacent to the Kanuha family land at TMK (3) 7-5-
3:005, and we have worked with the applicant for many years as adjoining
property owners. They are providing the Kanuha land with access and utilities at
several points from their project, and we would very much like to have their
project go through. It will help get the large rock stockpile on the Kanuha land
moved as well, which will please the neighbors.
The Kanuha family has owned their property for over 100 years but has
not been able to use it, and this adjacent property development will help the
Kanuha family finally realize many goals and benefits.
The project is a good use of the land, which provides many community
benefits (Salvation Army civic center; affordable housing; contribution to the
roadway needs of Kona) in addition to the benefits to the Kanuhas.
