I wish to testify regarding a number of the items on your agenda for May 16 and 17
Bills 224 and 225
I am against allowing the Hilu Hilu Development / Palamanui to rezone 725 acres of ag land.
There is no dispute that it will add to the already intolerable over use of our roads. Testimony at the last
hearing showed that the number of cars it will ad would extend over 15 miles along Queen K. More
fundamentally, as I testified before, it is just WRONG to run our society by depending on the patronage
of the mega rich. Basically, they are bribing us with the prospect of helping to build educational and
medical facilities, provide a few jobs and an inadequate amount of so-called "affordable
housing "...these guys think 700,000 is affordable... and it is, FOR THEM!
Education and Health care should be the responsibility of the community, THROUGH OUR
GOVERNMENT AND OUR TAXES. These rich mainland and --sad to say-- local land rapists come to
our HOME and if we let them buy us, we are whores if the council agrees to it, I guess that would
make them the pimps. Well, perhaps it's an off color analogy, but let me say that I think the people who
have been here since long before the Kona Inn was a shopping center or before we even needed traffic
lights have a right to be more than a little pissed off at the way our successive administrations have
ruined the island lifestyle. To tie a couple of cliche's together, "You can't put the toothpaste back in the
tube" but "when you're in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging"!
No more so called development (i.e. construction and adding to the burdens on roads, water, land,
schools, housing, electricity, etc, etc) until a real plan is developed to fix the problems we already have.
The only long term solution is to build an economy and a society not dependent on booming
construction. You, our leaders should guide us to place far more value on the preservation of a way of
living that has enchanted visitors since right before they started ruining it than on the acquisition of
unseemly wealth. And through your actions on the council, you should make it clear that those who
merely want to make themselves rich at the expense of the land and the local people will find an
unwelcome environment. This does not mean you have to be unfriendly to business! Aquaculture,
agriculture, eco-tourism, Hawaiian studies, clean energy, environmental research, and much more will
all create jobs and make people wealthy...just not the obscene and unnecessary megawealth of the land
speculators and developers who court you constantly. I really don't think it will hurt Charles Schwab to
DONATE his entire property to the community for a park and a university. He'd still be disgustingly
rich, and he ought to do it as penance to the island he's already fouled so unforgivably.

You know what's a disgrace? That this is even a battle!
Ever hear of no taxation without representation? I've been against splitting the county, but if you won't
even let this issue on the ballot, that will change my mind and plenty of others, I'd imagine.

Maybe Mr. Carr is a nice guy. But he's a land speculator, and this speculation should have to wait until
it will benefit ordinary people, working people, people already here and not just Mr. Carr and the rich
who will come from the mainland to buy his lots or his houses.
As with any and all developments, it will add to traffic, use more water than available, increase
overcrowding in our schools. And in this case he doesn't even offer roads or parks or
Why should this go through? Because Mr. Carr wants to make a lot of money? I think it should wait
until first we have the infrastructure (like mass transit, for one) and second, until he proposes land use
that will benefit the community in a way that promotes aloha, not greed. I'm sick of gates and curbs and
manicured little lawns in front of huge houses that all look the same. Why doesn't he sell the land and
find a piece of desert in Southern California to ruin?

More traffic. The Kaloko Mamalahoa Hwy intersection is already dangerous.
Bad for the watershed and endangered species.
I've been here since before those 20 acre ag lots were first split. No one who bought them had any right
to expect to be allowed to split them again. I would have loved to own one of those, it was so beautiful
up there. Now, as elsewhere, it's a haven for the elite, not the farmers. The smaller lots should never
have been allowed. Stop digging (see above)
Bill 246 The Bonehead Bill
As I understand it, we have a law requiring complete information be provided with subdivision
applications. Problem is, the County has been breaking the law, by not enforcing this law... solution:
CHANGE THE LAW???
How in the world can you begin to justify allowing one of your so-called "developments" to go forward
based on incomplete information?
This is a big part of why we are in such a mess! Developers tell you what they want and hint about
benefits to the community (what you want to hear) that for some strange reason just never seem to fully
materialize SURPRISE SURPRISE!

Ah, yes. It's just the experience of Hawaii I moved here for 30 something years ago and what tourists
nowadays first think of when the fantasize about a vacation in Hawaii.... townhouses!
GIVE ME A BREAK. WASN'T IT ZONED AG FOR A REASON?
WHY DON'T YOU JUST HIRE SOMEONE TO PAVE THE ENTIRE ISLAND.
Come to think of it, the way you're pissing off Madame Pele, she just might!
