Please vote no on this bill.
Previous testimony that I heard on this bill convinced me that there
is not enough water, not enough space in the schools, or adequate
road infrastructure to support "Lava Kuakini".
Some councilmembers stated that they were voting for these because
they wanted to see "affordable housing" for local workers. Will this
developer commit to building the "affordable units" first, so that
they can get the available water slots in case the rest can't be
built? I think not. What guarantee is there that "local workers"
vs. local or mainland retirees will even be able to purchase these
units? I don't see how one can discriminate between purchasers
unless this is a public housing project with specific rules in place.
The developer seemed to think it was the state's problem to worry
about adequate school infrastructure, not his. Has anyone on the
council spoken to the principals of Kahakai or the Innovations
Charter School to see if they can accommodate a big influx of
students any time soon?
Those who live in both the affordable housing and the more expensive
dwellings proposed on this site deserve adequate water, adequate
schools, adequate green spaces, and adequate roadways.
Those of us who already live here deserve them too. Approving this
project without adequate infrastructure will impact the rest of us
who are already dealing with those shortages.
