Mr. Higa:
We want to express our strong opposition for Bill 268. We believe all residents
should have an equal opportunity to be involved in the planning process, but
holding even-numbered council meetings on the Kona side of the island is not
warranted. This is one county, one island, and the city of Hilo just happens to be
the center of attraction for county, state and federal services. Let's keep it that
way.
There are numerous reasons for keeping the present set-up without further
changes. The people on the West side may not know that video conferencing is
available in Kona and Waimea whenever meetings are conducted in Hilo. On the
other hand, when the meetings are in Kona, everything is shut down in Hilo - no
video conferencing, so residents wanting to testify must drive over to the West
side.
Increasing the number of meetings on the West side not only means additional
cost for the council staff, but for all other county departments as well.
We ask you to please vote against Bill 268. Your constituents voices are loud
and clear, and also the voices of a vast majority of voters from East Hawaii.
