Subject: Bill 268: CCHARTER AMENDMENT TO HOLD EQUAL NUMBER OF MEETINGS IN WEST
HAWAII
Council Members,
I am writing in support of Bill 268 which I believe is up for FIRST READING on May 17, 2006
I think it is important for our government to come to the people, rather than the people coming to the
government.
Given dangerous roads, night driving, and traffic jams, this makes for a long, sometimes harrowing, and
expensive trip to access government proceedings. I believe when the Council meets, Council Members
have their travel expenses, including hotel, covered by the County. This is not true for citizens.
Even driving from my home to Waikoloa to a meeting in Keauhou is a round trip of 80 miles. And there is no
guarantee that the agenda item I came to address or observe will come up even close to the time frame shown in the agenda.
A previous agenda item can take 3 or more hours, an item can be tabled, or subject to delays that impact the publicize more
than the Council are common.
The burden of travel and cost should be shared equitably with all locales on the Island, so that we all have equal access.
