SUBJECT: Hawaii County Building
In regards to your inquiry as to proposing the demolition and rebuilding of the Hawaii County
Building, professionals must establish specifics as to cost and procedures. However, our preliminary
ballpark cost estimate is as follows:
Demolish existing building $2,000,000
New 80,000 square feet building $65,000,000
New 350 stall parking structure $10,000,000
Total $77,000,000
Please consider that this administration recognizes the historic and sentimental value of the Hawaii
County Building. In addition, the required planning and design for the demolition and rebuilding will
require at least 2 years and construction an addition 3 years to complete. We would also have to
decide whether to continue to occupy the existing building with its roof leaks, ADA compliance issues,
and voiced conditions of concern during the planning/design phase or vacate at this point to temporary
offices for the next 5 - 6 years? Lastly, our understanding of the community's view is that the Hawaii
County Building is proudly distinguished and should be maintained.
These factors have set our administrative policy that the demolition of the Hawaii County Building is
not a viable option and that we need to proceed with its renovation while also forwardly plan for
current and future office space requirement.
