1 am strongly in favor of Bill 258, and any efforts to eliminate the propagation of fighting cocks.
Under the guise of "cultural practices" this activity is now a commercial endeavor that seemed to appear about 20
years ago, along with the introduction of crystal methamphetamine to the Big Island.
I can see the only benefit of this practice is the income to feed stores and the airlines( that continue to risk avian
flu introduction to Hawaii)
The negative impacts are, the constant NOISE, (0430 am till nltefall), the resultant devaluation of properties within
1/2 mile of the offender, the concurrent drug trafficking, and the use of kids as "lookouts".
Born on the big island before the introduction of Welfare (1963?), the introduction of Marijuana (my first sighting
was 1969, and I am very angry that some consider this a "local" or even cultural drug) and the migration of
commercial chicken fighters, I remember hard working people, who would have a few backyard chickens on the
sugar plantations. Cockfighting was more recreation for the older Phillipino men. Now I understand that dead
chickens are stuffed with crystal methamphetamine and included with live birds for interstate trafficking. (This
overheard from teenagers in a very animated discussion about drug use in Hawaii).
Cultural cockfighting did not include gaffs, drug traffic, and dozens of birds.
My Neighbors have about 3 dozen birds. We are on good terms and I have no problem with them. I have issues
with the NOISE. I cannot sleep past 400 a.m.. If I chose to move, I would have to take less than market value
for my property, because of the NOISE.
Visitors from the mainland here to bury their father,could not beleive the NOISE. It is as intrusive as the "Boom
Box", and should be legislated as a Health issue.
I have gone on too long; Thank you for all you do for the taxpayers.
