Subject: 2% tax set-aside for land preservation
I think the way the petitions have been processed with such picayune requirements and shifting interpretations
and timelines imposed on the hard-working volunteers (I have been one of the signature gatherers), amounts to
childish/adolescent hazing at best ...and blatantly malevolent obstructionism at worst.
It is very common practice for people to omit suffixes such as street/st., place/pl., highway/hwy., circle/cir.,
lane/In., avenue/ave. when writing their addresses. (Is there also a requirement that the suffix be written out in
full, not abbreviated? That would fit the clear pattern of picayune interpretation, too!)
The thoroughfare name itself clearly ought to be sufficient when matching the name against the voter registration
roll to be certain that the signer is not a registered voter with the same name who lives at a different address.
That's the PURPOSE of the requirement, isn't it? Otherwise, just the name on the roll would be sufficient to
determine whether the signer is, in fact, a registered voter!
Yet the County bureaucrats have completely lost sight of the purpose of the requirement, and instead are
interpreting the law absolutely literally... perhaps as an instrument of power-mad, sadistic torture of the rest of us
to be certain we don't forget who actually holds the power and is really running the show.
Its ridiculous! How can YOU tolerate being associated with such behavior?
I also agree with the point made by the signature-gathering task force leaders that the mail address (which is no
less unique to the signing individual than their physical residence address) should be just as acceptable as the
physical street address for qualifying a voter's signature on the petition in question... indeed, on ANY petition.
Please stop this nonsense!
Put the issue of whether two percent of real property tax revenue should be set aside for land preservation every
year, with no cap on the accumulated amount in the fund, on the ballot for all Hawaii County voters to decide in
the next election.
