This responds to the copy of Resolution No. 192-97, Draft 3, that was received by our
Department on January 30, 1998.
The Resolution indicates that the existing fuel tax rates for the County of Hawaii of 8.8 cents
per gallon for diesel on-highway and 6.8 cents per gallon for LPG on-highway will be in effect until
June 3Q 2008. Please note that the amount of tax that counties can impose on liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG) is determined by section 243-4(c)(2), Hawaii Revised Statutes. The rate is equal to two-
thirds of the rates applicable to diesel oil, rounded to the nearest cent. Although the Resolution
adopted a rate of 6.8 cents per gallon, the rate is limited to 6 cents (8.8 cents x 2/3 = 5.8666 = 6
cents).
