Dear Councilman Arakaki,
You have no idea how pleased many of us are that you are planning to support
and introduce legislation to change the name "Hilo Panaewa Rainforest Zoo" by
adding the words "and Botanical Gardens!
It is well known that the volunteers who make up the "Friends of the Zoo" have
labored long and hard to make the Zoo what it is today. But not so well known are the
contributions made by volunteers from the various garden societies including the
Hawaii Vireya Rhododendron Society, Bamboo Society, Hilo Orchid Society, Hilo Palm
Society and the Daylily and Water Garden Society. Their efforts include donating
plants, designing the garden areas and maintaining them. Their only reward comes
from the satisfaction of helping develop a truly beautiful and family oriented Hilo
landmark.
Not only is this a lovely Hilo spot for the enjoyment of local families, but more
an more it is becoming recognized as an attraction for visitors. This is becoming
noticeable in various national publications which cant help but attract additional
visitors to the Big Island.
As you know the Zoo is in a fantastic location in that it is on the direct route to
Hawaii's most visited attraction, the Kilauea Volcano. This could be more noticeable to
those visitors with a more attractive sign on the highway that called attention to the Zoo
and Botanical Garden.
Thankyou for your many contributions over the years that help improve the Big
Island. As you contemplate retirement changing the Zoo could be yet another "feather
in your cap".
Cordially,
~/Pa • .
