This addition would more clearly describe this beautiful park and recognise the efforts of our local botanical societies in planting and maintaining gardens within the zoo. The Hawaii Chapters of the Bamboo Society and the Palm Society have planted rare and interesting plants throughout the zoo for years. They periodically fertilize and check them. The Tropical Rhododendron (Vireya) Society has planted and maintain a beautiful vireya species garden and hillside near the zoo entrance. The Water Garden Society built and helps to clean and maintain a lovely water garden complete with the prized Victoria waterlilies at the zoo entrance. Donated orchids and bromeliads have been planted throughout the zoo by our Senior Employment Program workers. A very rare Amorphophallus plant was donated to the zoo several years ago and occupies its own cage. The Friends of the Zoo have had an arrangement for over 5 years with the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in which their inmates periodically mow and weedwhack the zoo grounds including inside exhibit areas. FOZ provides plate lunches and sodas for them on the days they work. Visitors to the zoo are impressed and delighted with the gardens as evidenced by their comments in our guest book. Thus, we have felt for a long time that "gardens" should be added to the name. Thank you so much for your interest in and support for the zoo and for considering this proposal. If you have any questions or would like more information please call me at 963-6670. Sincerely, Comm. No. I01 •Z Ref. To: Jean A. Curtis, President Ref.
