Honorable Stacy Higa, Chair
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Subject: Support for Proposed Resolution No. 383-06
Dear Chair Higa and members of the Hawaii County Council:
For those of you who may not know me, my name is Gene Leslie. My partner,
Richard Gouviea and I own and operate Flowers for Mama, a local floral shop located
in Holualoa. We have been successful business owners for well over 20 years. I'm an
active member of our Kona community and currently serve as president of Kukini
Hawaiian Civic Club.
As a former Lai o Pua home owner and its community association's past president, I
support Jacoby Development's plans for a mixed-use project on the lands makai of
Queen Kaahumanu Highway.
I think the concept of this project is good. The Hawaiian Homes neighborhood of Lai
o Pua will benefit from this project, not only economically through the commercial
income which will eventually put Hawaiians onto land but also through job and
recreational opportunities. The commercial part of the project fits into an ahupua'a
concept from mauka to makai.
I understand that Jacoby Development wants to do its fair share. Building the
connector road from Kealakehe Parkway to Kuakini Highway, working with Kaloko-
Honokohau National Park on the shoreline area within its park boundary and setting
aside 400 feet of shoreline for a shoreline park are examples.
This project is good for Kona and for those of us who live and work here. I ask that
you not allow the development process to come to a halt at the wishes of a few, use
your resources, think strategically and move forward for the future of Kona.
I ask this council to direct the Planning 'rect r to do a feasibility study to amend the
General Plan for this public private p Hersh p.
ahal ,
ne Leslie
