A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE REQUEST OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII
FOR RELEASE OF GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND FUNDS FOR THE PLANNING,
DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE WEST HAWAII CAMPUS CENTER
DEVELOPMENTS.
WHEREAS, Act 178, Session Laws of Hawaii 2005, as amended and renumbered by
Act 160, Session Laws of Hawaii 2006, also cited as the Supplemental Appropriations Act of
2006, appropriated $18,207,000 for the planning, design, and construction of the Hawaii
Community College's new Komohana Campus and the West Hawaii Education Center; and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii currently houses its
programs in several leased buildings in South Kona and provides limited program offerings in
West Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the current leased facilities are located in a former shopping complex which
is not suitable for higher education and technical training programs; and
WHEREAS, this temporazy site is distant from the West Hawaii population centers of
North Kona and South Kohala; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, the Board of Regents selected a 500-acre site at Kalaoa between
developments in Kailua-Kona and the Kohala area; and
WHEREAS, this more central location needs to be developed to meet the current and
future educational needs of the West Hawaii community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the Hawaii County Council supports the request of the University of
Hawaii and strongly urges the Governor of the State of Hawaii to release General Obligation
Bond fends for the planning, design, and construction of the West Hawaii Campus Center
Developments.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Linda Lingle, Governor of the
State of Hawaii; the Honorable Robert Bunda, President of the Hawaii State Senate; the
Honorable Calvin K.Y. Say, Speaker of the Hawaii State House of Representatives; members of
the State Legislature; and the Honorable Harry Kim, Mayor of the County of Hawaii.
