The funds will be used towards the purchase of rescue vehicles and associated equipment that will aid in rescue services around the island. Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating an additional $30,206 to Fire's Rescue Equipment - Private account. In the current fiscal year's operating budget, $50,000 was already budgeted in that account in the event that donations, gifts or other contributions were received by the Fire Department. Sayre Memorial Foundation Fund presented an $80,206 check to Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira for the purchase of supplemental equipment for the department. Dr. Frank Sayre said, "they were humbled and elated when the Iromnan Foundation contributed $41,658.96 to the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation Fund". Additional contributions toward this effort were encouraged at the Annual Recognition Dinner in September. "We invite others to contribute to this Fund," said Laura "We've been inspired by the many people who have made contributions and expressed their desire to promote the intent of this memorial Fund. If we can help save even one life, then it's all worth it." Chief Oliveira will use this gift to purchase site utility vehicles, a multi-purpose utility vehicle with an emergency medical services kit, scuba tanks, portable radios and a variety of other equipment that will aid in rescue services around the island. "What's important is the Fund will help provide for supplies and modern equipment that rescue workers need to accomplish their rescues safely and effectively," said Laura At the 2006 Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation Fund Annual Dinner, three fire personnel were recognized for their extraordinary rescues, Fire Equipment Operator Richard Q. S. Fong, Fire Rescue Specialist Garrett Kim and Pilot Paul Darryl. Frank and Laura Sayre had to live through the terror of not knowing whom to turn to during their worst nightmare - finding someone willing to rescue their son, Daniel, when he fell down a steep 500-foot cliff by Kapaloa Falls in Pololu Valley on the Big Island. Sadly, Danny did not survive, but the incident left them with a renewed faith in people's pure kindness and compassion. "How do you repay people like them, how do you even say thank you?" asked Laura. "We realized that despite the great dangers that rescue workers face in the course of their work, they don't get the same recognition that others do. We wanted to express our appreciation for the kindness shown by recognizing present day heroes." "We decided that a memorial fund honoring fire, rescue and emergency personnel is an appropriate way to say `thank you'," said Frank. They decided to establish the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Fund with Hawaii Community Foundation as a way to memorialize Danny's life, and to express their appreciation for the kindness shown to them by "present day heroes." Established in 1916, the Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) is a statewide, charitable services and grantmaking institution endowed with contributions from many donors. HCF is a steward of more than 400 donor funds, including more than 100 scholarship funds, and distributes charitable funds to Hawai`i's nonprofit organizations through a variety of programs. HCF also serves as a resource on philanthropy, and community issues and trends.
