We support the Bill for an Ordinance authorizing various fees to be waived for a limited time, including landfill tipping fees. The waiver of tipping fees would provide residents and businesses the ability to legally dispose of any debris generated from our recent magnitude 6.6 earthquake without the added economic burden of disposal fees. We would ask that an application form be completed and submitted to the Department of Environmental Management at 25 Aupuni Street, Room 210, Hilo, HI 96720, or faxed to 808- 961-8086. Basically, a resident or business owner will send a completed application to the Department of Environmental Management as soon as possible. It will be approved and either mailed or faxed back to the applicant with the appropriate signatures. They can then take the approved form with them to the landfill so they will not be charged. Alternately, if a resident or business owner has already disposed of debris generated from the earthquake, they may apply and upon approval, their account will be credited appropriately. OCT 19 2006 Hawaii County is an equal opportunityprovider and employer. r op The forms will be made available at the scale houses of both landfills, the Kona Mayor's office, the Kona Council Office, our main office, on the County website for solid waste (http://co.hawaii.hi.us/directory/dir envmne.htm#dir solidwaste) and at other convenient locations as needed. The proposed application form is enclosed. We would ask for everyone's help in sorting loads as much as practicable, utilizing recycling of glass, cardboard, metals and all other appropriate reductions for landfilling. We would also ask that everyone be cognizant that some fairly common building materials, such as floor tiles, may contain hazardous materials such as asbestos. If at all possible, these household materials, including yard and garden chemicals, strong cleaners and other potentially hazardous items should be held for the Saturday, December 2 (Hilo) and Saturday, December 9 (Kealakehe) Household Hazardous Waste collections. However, if these materials are kept separately, they may be approved for disposal at the landfill. If unsure about any materials, and whether they will be allowed for regular disposal, please direct anyone to call our Solid Waste Division at 961-8339 or the Solid Waste Chief at 961- 8515.
