Subject: superferry EIS
Dear Council Members:
I urge you to vote in favor of the resolution requesting that Hawaii Superferry complete
an Environmental Impact Statement.
Unlike buses and cars that travel on paved roads, and airplanes that travel in airways
mostly devoid of wildlife, the Superferry will be operated in an environment teaming with
wildlife, including multiple endangered species such as monk seals, sea turtles, humpback
whales, sperm whales, etc. The high speeds at which Superferry will operate make it much
more dangerous to these animals than vessels operating at lower speeds. There are also
concerns with inter-island transport of alien species and other issues. The only way to
fully address these issues is through an EIS. To the attitude that an EIS should not be
performed because the cruise ships and barges have not completed one, I say nonsense. The
high speeds involved, and the fact that Superferry will be transporting cars and boats
between islands put it in a separate category of concern. However, there are plenty of
Hawaii residents that would like to see the cruise ship companies complete an EIS, as
well. If you feel it would be more equitable, please do not hesitate to request that both
the Superferry and the cruise lines perform an EIS.
