Hawaii County Council Public Hearing
Bill No. 309, Draft 4 (Amendment F-4) r
Aloha Hawaii County Council,
I am historic Keatakowa'a Heiau Preservation Council Resident
consultant, Jo-Anne Kahanamoku Sterling. I am also a member of
the Polynesian Voyaging Society. But formost, I am an artisian,
whose passion is feather artwork.
I want to address the social importance a project like this brings to
the community. I believe this project surrounding the lands of
Honokohau will create a social environment that will raise the
intellect of this community. There are no cultural arts here in Kona.
When a community nas a place tnat stimulates intellectual thought,
you have a healthier, more well balanced community.
For example, I remember as a teen, going to Mauna Kea Beach
Hotel, just after it was built. Just being around an environment like
that, made us think more of ourselves and the possibilities of a
bigger world. It taught us culture and surrounded us with fine arts.
Being in this kind of environment, made me a better member of
society. And so can this type of project today.
I am concerned though, that 20 years from now, will the level of
the project remains as high as when it was built? Too often, our
hotels and resorts start off classy and are not kept up over a long
period of time, not allowed to beautify themselves because a few in
the community think change is wrong. The high level of this project
needs to be long-standing.
Please join me in supporting the Planning Director's General Plan
Interim Amendments, Bill No. 309, Draft 4.
