Subject: Council Mtg Oct 24 re: Bill 309
It is my understanding you are voting on Bill 309E-4 which proposes to change 300 acres of
coastal property from open to urban. This change is to accommodate a hotel, marina slips
and timeshares.
As a registered voters we say NO. The county has to control development. It is necessary
to grow as a community, but within the means to support it. Did you know that we currently
have a four day fresh fruit/vegetable supply if we were cut off by some disaster or
strike? Why, because it is going to the large hotels, not to the community. We need
tourism to survive, but we also need to survive.
Currently there are not enough employees to staff the existing hotels/ resorts. Why would
you add more? An above average hotel has 1 employee per room, that's 800 employees-1700
timeshares 1 employee per 4 rooms, that's 425 employees and 800 marina slips, 75-100
employees. We are currently short over 1000 employees in our existing hotels, where are
1000+ more employees coming from and where will they live ...not in the 2 or 3 affordable
homes being built.
Then we have the road/traffic situation. Did you know we can't even get asphalt for the
roads that have been approved? Now we're waiting to move utility poles that were installed
even though the road project was in planning. No planning for the future.
Regarding 309F-2. The legal stuff and the loopholes involved are just that. What is real
is...
I live in Kona town near the beach, do you know where our waste (poop, pee, bad water)
goes? Into the ocean. Do you know where all the peoples waste above me goes? Into the
ocean, sometimes it runs under our houses when it rains up mauka and smells really bad.
Maybe we should work on this before Kailua Bay winds up looking like the Boston Harbor. In
case you didn't know the water is black and the fish are deformed because of exactly what
we are doing here in Kona, building without infrastructure. Of course they are trying to
fix it
now, but it's too late. The bay is black and the fish are deformed.
Vote NO on 309F-2. Don't pollute Kealakekua Bay with more development above.
Please consider our future when voting on these issues.
