Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Resolution No. 464-06, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 464-06, transmitted by Hawaii County Council Member Bob Jacobson, via
Communication No. 1080, dated September 11, 2006, states a need for the Hawaii County
Council to support efforts that address public interests and community needs for local media,
including news, access, and ownership.
There was no testimony from the public regarding the proposed resolution.
Council Member Gary Safarik requested further clarification regarding other existing legislation, if
any, and how this resolution would interact with said legislation. Council Member Dr. Fred C.
Holschuh asked if Mr. Jacobson sought input from HSAC (Hawai`i State Association of Counties)
regarding its position on this resolution. Mr. Jacobson replied that he had not. Council Vice Chair
Virginia Isbell stated that she supported the basic premise of the resolution, but needed more
information before the next meeting. Committee Members agreed that more information regarding
this resolution was necessary before the next meeting. Mr. Jacobson stated that he will have his
staff provide all requested information and clarification to all Council Members prior to the next
meeting. Mr. Jacobson also stated that he will seek input on his proposed legislation from the
other counties.
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovermnental Relations is in accord with the purpose
and intent of Resolution No. 464-06, and recommends its adoption.
