Re: Bill 162 (Hawaiian words and terms)
Dear Council Members:
I support Bill 162 and any other measure which will encourage the use of Hawaiian words
and terms for streets, land divisions, developments and government publication. Within a
generation or two, usage of Hawaiian land names will disappear unless a measure is in place to
ensure that the traditional land names (which form the basis for all private and public land) will be
forgotten. Also, the proper use of Hawaiian words and terms will also serve as a basis for public
education on Hawaiian issues and, further, an opportunity for learning the rich cultural heritage of
the islands.
I recall a point taught in communication class that a person's name is one of the most
important things to that person. Remember it, pronounce it correctly and spell it correctly. The
same point applies to the usage of Hawaiian words and terms, especially since Hawaiian is an
official language of the state. Thank you very much.
Yo rs truly,
Michael J. Matsukawa
