Dear Council and Planning Committee Members,
This is a very important time for the lands and people of our island. We all have come to the
realization that lands of local importance may be lost forever if we do not act, and act soon.
Two parcels of particular local importance and recognized by the Open Space Commission are
slated for acquisition by Hawaii County. Waipi'o Lookout Point and Puapua'a on Alii Drive are
two such sites.
The Lands Committee of the Hawaii Island Land Trust (HILT) recently identified both parcels as
unique for both scenic and cultural attributes and HILT fully concurs with the Mayor and
Commission's recommendations.
HILT would like to go on record as supporting the County acquisition of these important lands
and is willing to assist the County in any appropriate manner.
The County is to be recognized for acting quickly on the Open Space Commission's
recommendations. Protection of these lands honors the past and invests in the sustainable future
of Hawaii.
The wisdom to begin active land conservation on this island will be one of the County's finest
legacies.
We look forward to to collaborating with you on this effort.
